There is something magical about the power of a great quote. It can be timeless and can provoke an everlasting impact on how we approach life and work. We are often inundated with quotes, slogans or hip song lyrics, and there is something truly special when we find one that triggers a strong emotional reaction that influences and guides our lives.
Many years ago I discovered the quote below and the impact on me was immediate.
“The best way to predict the future is to create it”.
While I have come across many great quotes since then, none have had a greater impact. Most seem to attribute the quote to Peter Drucker, although its origins have been disputed.
So what makes this quote so special? So motivating?
Ever been at a work meeting where the discussion focuses on why we cannot do something? Have you ever felt the problem is too complex and that we become afraid to act? Think of how helpless that discussion has made you feel.
To me this quote is positive, optimistic and empowering. It speaks to doing rather than sitting back and waiting to see what happens. It is the catalysis for action. Afterall, without a drive to create we are motionless.
Several years ago at my son’s graduation, a speaker spoke of their philosophy for living their life. They contrasted their approach with others, and he used a traffic light to frame his remarks. He shared his view that some people live as if the light is always red and wait for it to turn green. He however lived as if the light was always green unless it turned red.
To me the quote, “the best way to predict the future is to create it” is living as if the light is green.
